Wine and Sand Makes for Great Fun!

With a glass of wine and a little imagination, a belle can have a great time anywhere, but we truly can say that we had fun this cold Birmingham night at Sloss Furnace. Let me start off by saying that though Shermika and I travel all seasons, including winter, we don’t like the cold. We had no idea how cold it was until we got in the car to head downtown.

The sis and I are Junior Patrons of the Birmingham Museum of Art; there are several events throughout the year one can attend. We heard good things about their Iron Pour Party, so we decided to attend. To say the least, we had a ball. Sloss is rumored to be haunted, but we didn’t see any ghosts. Though I like to watch real ghost stories on TV, I most def don’t want to see a ghost in person.

Everyone had their own piece of sand.

It was very cold and dark, but there were plenty of tall portable heaters that saved our night. There are so many things that I can appreciate about Birmingham, including iron. In case you didn’t know, Birmingham was known back in the day for iron. Our city still produces the most unique iron in the country. We make everything from cast iron skillets to cast iron art. From sand and with cast iron we made one-of-a-kind

paper weights.

I wrote out the word: Love with the heart as the "O!" Shermika made a "S" that the word love next to it!
The ladies at our table made some cute designs!

To put it simple, we carved our our own design with a nail on a slab of sand and had some iron artists pour hot lava-like iron inside the sand until it hardened. Since sand doesn’t burn, the mold is created beautifully. Have you ever heard of doing something like this? It was my first time and I can honestly say that I look forward to doing this again. Check out our video below. You can see how they pour the hot iron inside of our sand blocks. There are a few more pics to see below, too!

Easy Breezy Thanksgiving with Burnt Cornbread

Though our bread muffins were burned... its picture WAS going to be taken!

I hope y’all had a wonderful and spirited Thanksgiving! My family and I have a lot to be thankful for and is the reason we give thanks each day. I love to see this time of year come, but we all know what’s to follow: shopping chaos. My sister and I had three guests over (including mama) and had a fab dinner on Thursday. For the last 5 years a belle has prepared dinner at our home.

Our mama is so proud that we cook like her and the funny part is that we learned at a young age. Learning to cook like our mama is what makes the holidays even more special. We have all of her recipes down in our heads and will not give them away.

We didn’t wait until the last minute to cook (a bulk of our food was prepared beforehand & then frozen). I wanted to rest on Thanksgiving and enjoy my food without rush–this is exactly what I did. I sipped on the fab pineapple fruit punch drink that Shermika made and enjoyed our company. We didn’t cook a lot of food, but it was divine. You’d expect nothing less from a belle!

It’s so funny now, but it wasn’t at the time: our corn bread muffins were cooked on the bottom rack and burned a little.

We had mac ‘n cheese, dressing, collard greens, candied-yams, and ham. We are most def not the turkey family unless it’s smoked. Ahhh the thought of a smoked turkey leg makes me shimmy!

One thing I can say is that we weren’t going to wash many dishes, so we pulled out the fancy Chinet paper plates. Oh how I envy y’all that have decent guests that offer to help clean the kitchen!

We got our greens from a local family farmer’s market and needless to say, we have plenty left for Christmas. They are cleaned and stored in the freezer waiting to come out in a few weeks. Take a look at the rest of our photos including a few prep pics and our desserts: homemade apple pie (I made) and real red velvet cake (Shermika made)!

Eats & Treats: Pinkberry Yogurt is a Belle’s Best Friend!

Very sweet employee at Birmingham's Pinkberry Frozen Yogurt!

Last night the sis and I attended the grand opening of this new frozen yogurt company in Birmingham before heading to the market! Random: Pinkberry has the cutest song when you visit their website (listen while you read this post)! This frozen swirly goodness can be found all over the U.S., but we visited their NEW Summit location. Did I tell you that this is the first Pinkberry in Alabama? Yep, and we have it right here in B’ham.

My frozen goodness on the left & Shermika's on the right!

We were invited to the opening by one of the affable owners, Courtney Mason, over a month ago at the Southern Women’s Show, so you know a belle wouldn’t miss it. Everyone that walked through the door received gratis Pinkberry treats!

I had the tangy/tart, but delish Pomegranate yogurt back in October and didn’t shy away from it last night. The sweet young lady pictured above topped it with fresh raspberries, pomegranate seeds and kiwi! Shermika had their Chocolate yogurt with brownie bites and Heath candy pieces. Fresh cut fruit and toppings were plentiful.  (more…)

Top 10 Fab Finds at The Market 2011

A belle had a ball at the Junior League of Birmingham’s Sneak Peek last night of The Market. Attendees were treated to wine tastings by Whole Foods, scrumptious goodies like greek chicken bites, Antipasto Kabobs, pulled pork sliders and more. My favorite was the white chocolate peanut butter bites!

The Market is a shopper’s paradise with 80+ vendors selling everything from Christmas ornaments to treats for foodies. There was a silent auction, a cupcake book signing and guests had a chance to win a diamond from Bromberg’s with a $10 donation for a glass of champagne. (more…)
