Tête-à-tête Thursdays: Prophetik Designer Jeff Garner

A stunning dress made by southern designer Jeff Garner. The dress is made of peacock feathers, a 100+ year old quit, and other materials!
Y’all will not believe who we met yesterday. A belle is on cloud nine and cannot believe we got to chat about fashion, life, the environment, and health for over an hour with one of the most unique designers of our time: Jeff Garner.
Having designed clothes/costumes for over 2,500 women and some men, inclusive of Taylor Swift, The Jonas Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus, and Kate Middleton, Garner is a very unique sustainable fashion designer. An avid surfer, Garner sustains himself on berries and 3-4 hours of sleep! He told a belle that he is far more productive with less sleep.
What’s so unique about him you ask? Well, Garner’s designs are organic and he doesn’t use traditional harsh dyes on his clothes. His dyes are made at a community garden in Nashville, Tennessee. With Birmingham Fashion Week (BFW) 2012 on our heels we can’t wait to share his talent with you!
Casually dressed in his own designs, the uber cool Garner graciously allowed the ArtBelles to interview him. His line is called Prophetik and if you read our tweets you already know we were excited. We immediately noticed his warm demeanor, which was quite telling. His white shirt was unbuttoned and showed a majority of his chest. Garner completed the look with a dark green jacket, brown pants and riding boots. Tamika loved his boots and it was the ongoing laugh everyone shared when she brought them up throughout the evening.
This southern bohemian gentleman splits his time in London for 3 months, Malibu for another 3 months, and his hometown of Franklin, Tennessee (a Civil War town) for 6 months. He loves to ride horses and does so every day. Garner has even used horses in some of his London fashion shows. He’s a single father of a 9 year old daughter, is in his early 30′s and is a believer of recycling what you have to create something new.
Oh, before we forget. Remember the very first dress that we showed with the peacock feathers? You will be able to see it in person this summer. He told us it is going on display at the Smithsonian. Look out for it! You can thank us later for the inside scoop.
Leaving a full ride to West Point to study nuclear arms, Garner chose to follow his heart and the rest is history. Check out the interview below, ArtBLT’ers!…
What age did you start designing and how did you get your BIG start? Around age 6/7, I knew I wanted to design clothes when I took my sister’s Barbie sketch pad (he smiles and laughs). I started designing for friends who were musicians, and I worked on tour buses. I did stage clothing and went on to bigger productions. Through musicians I met fashion people.
What are must have items in any wardrobe? Classic pieces such as a smoker’s jacket, waist coat and Jodhpur (horse riding) pants.
What is something you won’t be caught dead wearing? Denim, vinyl pants and fur.
Is this your first show in Birmingham? No, I actually did a charity event for the NAACP. I am excited about BFW though.
What is the name/theme of your collection for BFW? “Rebel Yell.” I was in a rebellious mood and knew my voice needed to be stronger in sustainable fashion. The colors will be brighter.
What’s next for your line? Handbags, accessories, etc.? I want to be a lifestyle brand and would be interested in expanding.
Side Note: Tamika asked Garner to show us the folio iPhone case he designed that were included in the GQ awards swag bags a while back. It took him 3 months to make and was recycled Coach leather. Y’all it was very nice! Shermika asked Garner to make something for us Droid users too!
If you are curious about his take on vanity sizing, Garner says that he tries to stay true to proper sizing standards
His line cuts off at a size 10. Garner was a delight to interview; he was so hospitable and is a wonderful person. A belle was honored to literally touch his designs and be in his presence! We are excited to see Garner at Birmingham Fashion Week that kicks off next week. Get your tickets TODAY because they will sell out. Hope to see YOU there!
Take a gander at some of his recent collections below and be sure to look at more of his fab designs.

Very Cool. I must say, I agree with him on the fur thing. . never wear it. Okay let me get off my PETA soapbox and back to the post. You ladies. . um. .belles did a wonderful interview and I am glad that you had the opportunity to do so (yes, I read your excited tweets). There are some interesting designs in this posts.
Thanks, Sharon! The designs are very interesting to say the least. Do check out the other designs as they all are so different. Love them!!
He's very easy breezy no shoes, thats unprecedented. Love the gothic dress you mentioned he showed at fashion week, I have a weak spot for anything medieval. It's amazing you both got to meet him! I wasn't familiar with him before reading this, but he sounds like a nice guy!
He was very nice and totally fun to interview! Thanks for reading Shan!
That was sweet!!!! I'd be so nervous! I'm never gonna make it as a fashion blogger. LOL
It was and Jeff is sweeter than pie. Couldn't believe how nice/laid back he is! And you are too funny & will not have ANY trouble fashion blogging!

Oh my goodness…I would love that red jacket for my husband…he would wear it too! The quilted men’s jacket reminds me of something from another world or a sci-fi sort of clothing. He has a very courageous style.
Thank you for sharing this post!
