The Whipping Man Review

Friends we had a great weekend and hope you did as well! A belle got some culture in as we saw Matthew Lopez‘s The Whipping Man at the Hertz Theatre. This venue is intimate, had opening seating, and was the perfect place for this story. This play was awesome and will leave you thinking about it as you head to your car. Tamika and I are still talking about the impact the play had on us, so you know it was AWESOME!

The Whipping Man is set in Richmond, Virginia in 1865. It centers around a Jewish Confederate soldier, Caleb DeLeon (played by Jeremy Aggers), who comes home to find out the life he no longer knew is there. Two of his families newly emancipated slaves, Simon (Keith Randolph Smith) and John (John Stewart) are with him. As the three men celebrate Passover, secrets are revealed, and all three of them find that their lives will no longer be the same.

The audience feels the impact President Lincoln’s assassination had on the characters, the brutality of slavery, and the strength of the human spirit. You will be moved as you are transported in time. The set looked like an old house that was once beautiful. The sound effects were great as it rained a lot in the play. The Whipping Man is funny, moving, and relevant. One clearly sees how culture, race and religion intersect. There are elements in the play where you feel the spirit of slaves and realize the emotional impact of slavery. One will learn about the notorious whipping man and be transported to a place where African-Americans were not recognized as humans.

Instead of heading to a movie or watching TV… go out and see this play–it will move and inspire you!

The Whipping Man shows until April 7th. You can buy tickets here.

Disclosure: We received tickets to see this  play. As always… a belle’s opinion are her own!

Happy 125th B’day, Belk!

Hey, friends! We hope y’all had a great weekend. A belle was tapping her heels when we were invited to an event celebrating Belk Inc.‘s 125th birthday last Friday. It was a wonderful Belktravaganza! 🙂 I know you are well aware that we were over the moon since Belk is one of our favorite stores. Period (B’ham’s Summit location has THE best shoes)!

The sis and I had the opportunity to meet, sit down and literally have lunch with Belk’s COO Johnny Belk, who is so personable. Belk spoke of the company’s committed efforts to support the community. In certain cities Belk even has a pink bus that will do its part to help prevent and spread breast cancer awareness! I squealed when I found out it has a shoe on top of it! How cool is that?! You can get more info here. It only will hit a few cities, so, keep up with us for the deets.

We were so happy to hear that Belk is continuing to evolve as they celebrate the essence of modern southern women. Being that we are frugal fashionistas we appreciate a company that has quality clothing at affordable prices. The best part about this store is that a lot of the merchandise is created exclusively for them AND they annually add new southern talent to their stores with this contest/showcase.

Tamika and I loved that Belk chatted about his family, life in general, and was interested to know more about us while we ate some fab food. He talked about his grandfather who was once a farmer before creating Belk Inc. and how important it is to have people around you that want to see you do well. His advice to us about being the best business person you can be: work hard. We all can do this, right?

Check out the tasty cupcakes they gave us when we left!

Broadway Love: Fela! The Musical

Friends, we hope you all had a great weekend! Though it was freezing here, a belle got some culture in all while looking fierce as we went to see Fela! at the Fox Theatre. Fela! is produced by some Hollywood heavyweights, like Jay Z, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. We are so glad this production saw the light of day.

When I tell y’all that Tamika & I have seen a LOT of shows (this is an art blog), but Fela! is one of the best ones we’ve seen, I am not telling a lie! It’s AMAZING, AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL!!!

Fela! details the life of Nigerian musician and activist  Fela Kuti, who created Afrobeat. Afrobeat is a fusion of jazz, funk and African rythms and harmonies. Fela! used his music to speak of the corruption in the Nigerian government.

In retaliation, he was arrested, beaten and his mother was killed. His music inspired the world because it not only makes one dance, but makes one think. There are several pieces in the musical where you too may question things.

We had never heard of Fela! before the musical appeared on Broadway, and boy were we missing out! If you’re a fan of conscious music, you will love Fela! His music is dope, his story is inspiring and his strength is unparalleled.

Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child is a leading actress in the musical, and does a very good job. The musical is riveting, with the deep thuds of drums, blaring horns that make you get up and dance–yes, we did a little bit of shimmying, and the tap dancing. You will be inspired, riveted, angry, and sad. Fela! does this for you and to you!

Fela died in 1997 and over a million people attended his funeral–proof of a man that touched the lives of others.

The show has been extended to March 6th so get your tickets now and check out our instagramed photo below to get a discount!

Even if you’re not getting married, Social Box can be used for private events, corporate events and more. Guests can share videos and photos, while instantly linking them to Facebook. The company is based in Atlanta, and the peeps that work there are super sweet.

Our pal Khalia and her cell phone spy software engaged mom loved the event!
